I'm not that vegan

Be warned slightly deep post coming up 😅

Some of you may know that I'm vegan, it's a big part of my life - but it does not identify me.
I'm Janine, an individual who is creative, humble, trustworthy, sensitive, has many different hobbies and also happens to be vegan.
This post is not going to be about my vegan experience and vegan journey, that can come in a future post.

I am not going to introduce myself to you as "the vegan" nor am I going to deny that I am vegan if the conversation comes up.
I am not going to be disrespectful and act grossed out if you're eating  a rack of ribs in front of me.
I am not going to preach about the benefits of veganism and why I am vegan and why you should go vegan unless you are genuinely interested and ask me.
I am not going to flood your timeline with disturbing videos and images of what goes on in the animal industry.
I am not going to refuse to go to a restaurant simply because there are no vegan options - I understand I am the minority and will easily adapt.
I am not going to get upset simply because you post or send me pictures of meat to offend me.
I am not going to feel hurt or out smartened simply because you shouted or said "bacon" to me.
I am not going to make you uncomfortable if you are doing or eating something that I wouldn't simply because of my lifestyle choice.
I am not that vegan.

I am not your stereotypical vegan that you have in your head who is a know it all, who only thinks that they are right, who is disrespectful to anyone not following their lifestyle choices, who expects everyone to embrace the lifestyle and who preaches and rants about my personal choice.
My views and opinions are mine and I am in no way, shape or form trying to force them onto you.

Now I understand where this stereotype comes from, there are vegans who act the opposite of what I said. But please, do not think that because there are some who act one way, we all do.  I have had my fair share of bullying simply because of my lifestyle choice, and whilst I have come out of it stronger I would never want anyone else to have to pass through it simply because of a personal choice they made.

The choice of embracing the vegan lifestyle is definitely not an easy one and trust me it is not done because it is "fun" or "trendy". I have embraced this lifestyle because of what I care and believe in. Veganism is a selfless act which gives personal benefits and these do not have to be shared. I am not perfect, I've had plenty of slip ups and times of doubt but I am constantly learning and trying my best.

Thank you for taking the time to hear me out, this was something I've wanted to share for a long time. If at least one of you takes something away from this post and tries to treat those embracing veganism better, than this post was worth it.

Talk to you soon,
Janine xo
